Sharing never tasted so good BY ASHLEY GHOLAMHOSSEINI
About the Junior Service League The Junior Service League (JSL) of Americus began in 1937 to provide aid for Sumter County residents. Through volunteer hours and the financial support of citizens throughout the state, these women have provided services to numerous philanthropies in Georgia. How the community is served JSL members dedicate hundreds of hours monthly in seven areas of service: day treatment, education, hospital, Mattie Marshall, Meals on Wheels, Methodist Youth Home and Silver Spice. The Mattie Marshall Committee works monthly at the Alzheimer’s Unit at the Magnolia Manor nursing home. Silver Spice is a committee that entertains at local nursing homes through fashion shows and scrapbook parties. Meals on Wheels delivers hot meals to shut-ins and the elderly. Day treatment volunteers play bingo and coordinate special activities weekly with mentally challenged adults. Second Vice President Angie Love has been a JSL member for three years. “All of the money [we raise] stays in our community of Sumter County,” she says. “We also have a dental clinic serving all kindergarteners in Sumter County. Local dentists volunteer their time to examine the children and show them correct dental hygiene, and the league provides toothbrushes,” she says. Great recipes, great cause “The ‘Something Southern’ cookbook was first introduced in 1976. It was reintroduced in 2005 with the addition of 100 new recipes,” Love explains. “Something Southern … Then and Now” holds 383 pages of recipes and photos of South Georgia’s historic sites. An entire chapter is devoted to sharing the favorite recipes of Sumter County native President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn. It also features a section called “Easy Does It” for new cooks. The featured recipe for this month is from Jimmy Carter’s mother, “Miss Lillian” Carter. Copies of “Something Southern … Then and Now” may be ordered for $23.50 each, plus $6.50 shipping and handling. Add $25 for each additional book (this includes shipping). Make checks payable to the Junior Service League, Attn: Cookbook, and mail payment to P.O. Box 92, Americus, GA 31709. To learn more about JSL, visit www.americusjsl.org. |
