Planting a tastier future

BY CHARLIE DURDEN

The Pickens County Master Gardeners program was originally proposed to County Extension Agent Rick Jasperse in 1999 by Jane Waller. By Nov. 18, 1999, there were 13 members. Since then, the club has grown to 54 members under current President Pat Holmes.

Each member of the Master Gardeners in Pickens County donates a minimum of 25 hours a year to the organization and the community. During the first year of training, the members each donate 50 hours of service. Last year, they contributed a total of 1,925 hours and raised more than $33,000.

The members learn about plants, plant diseases, insects, soil and many other useful gardening techniques. After developing these special skills, the gardeners then go out into the community to make it more attractive. Their projects consist of finding spots in Pickens County, such as the Senior Center, and landscaping the yards. The gardeners also sell their produce and other gardening goods on most Saturday mornings during summer in Newton Park at the Jasper farmers' market.

Not only can the Pickens County Master Gardeners plant beautiful gardens, they can cook as well. Over the past seven years, members have compiled recipes from entrees that have been brought to their covered-dish meetings. Their cookbook "Master Gardeners Cook" holds in it more than 100 recipes along with many useful cooking and gardening tips.

This month's recipe is a 7UP Cake by Edie Jones. This is one of the many great recipes featured in "Master Gardeners Cook" -- a sure hit at your next gathering.

Copies of "Master Gardeners Cook" can be ordered for $15 plus $3 for shipping and handling. Make check or money order payable to Pickens County Master Gardeners and mail to: 109 Depot Street, Jasper, GA 30143.
